Spice up ad strategy with front-cover placement
(7/2/2009) Want to make a big splash with your print advertising strategy, but the typical quarter- page ad isn't working for you? Consider a front-cover ad placement. Yep, it's exactly what it sounds like. Although some publications might not be willing to play ball (many newspapers and magazines consider the cover to be sacred space), it doesn't hurt to ask. Pricing will vary depending on the publication and its reach, but expect to pay a premium for a cover spot.

Use focus groups to improve your show
(6/25/2009) Whether you're looking for feedback from current stakeholders or input from potential new participants, focus groups are an excellent tool for digging deeper into your show and your market than a survey would ever allow. To get started, it's important to define your objectives. What specific information do you need? Are you trying to change menus or searching for the future of your industry? Next, set a location. Will you hold this meeting on site during the current show or sometime during the year in your office? Then, determine your sample selection. A group of eight to 10 people typically works well. Remember, who you target is critical; try not to segment your group too finely. As your objectives get more specific, your sample becomes even more important. Clear registered traveler program shuts down, refuses refunds
(6/25/2009) New York-based airport security lane operator Verified Identity Pass Inc. announced earlier this week without warning that it had shut down its Clear registered traveler program at about 20 airports across the country, citing a failure to negotiate an agreement with its senior creditor to continue operations. For a fee between $100 and $199 per year, the program provided members with access to designated security lanes designed to speed up the security screening process. Now, according to the company's Web site, its more than 230,000 members won't be getting refunds either. The company also claims that applicant and member data will continue to be secured in accordance with the Transportation Security Administration's Security, Privacy and Compliance Standards, and that it will take appropriate steps to delete the information.

Hanley Wood Exhibitions executives resign
(6/18/2009) Galen Poss, President of the exhibitions group at Hanley Wood, resigned this week. Exhibitions Executive Vice President Michael Green also left the company. Rick McConnell, another VP within the group, will serve as acting president as the company searches for a replacement, Hanley Wood CEO Frank Anton told FOLIO:, EXPO's sister magazine. The resignations mark a change in reporting structure within the group, as Poss' replacement is expected to now report to business media group President Peter Goldstone, not Anton. “This reporting structure will make it easier for our business media group and exhibitions to develop targeted packages — a change we think will better serve customers and drive revenue,” Anton says. “We've encouraged this type of teamwork for several years with some success but think it is essential to future success.”
