Viad Corp., the parent company of general services contractor Global Experience Specialists (GES), reported a first-quarter net loss of $3.0 million, compared with a profit of $1.50 million during the same quarter last year. Viad experienced first quarter revenues of $224.4 million, down $16.6 million from 2009.

The American Thoracic Society (ATS) has partnered with Ascend Integrated Media to develop a mobile app for its ATS 2010 International Conference, to be held May 14-19, 2010, in New Orleans. The Ascend-designed app, which will be free for members to download, will let ATS attendees access event information including the exhibit guide, conference preview materials and the conference daily newspaper on their mobile smartphones.

After two years of testing, Hilton Worldwide has introduced LightStay, a proprietary sustainability tracking system designed to measure the use of energy, water, waste and carbon across more than 200 operational practices, such as housekeeping, paper product usage, food waste, chemical storage, air quality and transportation. The system includes a Meeting Impact Calculator that measures the environmental impact of any meeting or conference held at a Hilton Worldwide property.

The United States hotel industry reported mixed results in the three key performance metrics for first-quarter 2010 in year-over-year measurements, according to data from STR. The industry’s occupancy was up 2.3 percent to 51.9 percent, the average daily rate fell 4.3 percent to $96.27 and revenue per available room decreased 2.1 percent to $50.01.

The barrage of canceled flights and restrictions resulting from Iceland’s volcanic eruption has cost the United States economy $650 million, according to the U.S. Travel Association. Roger Dow, President and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, says that the loss to the economy — averaging $130 million per day — illustrates how the world depends on travel for tourism and business, and demonstrates the importance of policymakers acting on facts and retaining a measured response to crises.

Following in the footsteps of Facebook and Twitter, Foursquare is the latest craze among the social media savvy. Foursquare members use the site to alert others in their social networks (including Twitter and Facebook) where they are at any given moment by either logging on to the Web site (www.foursquare.com) or using a smartphone application to “check in.” The people that check in to a given spot or location the most often become the “mayor” of that location.

Following a Dallas, TX, arbitration hearing, Hanley Wood Business Media has been ordered to pay a pair of former executives $2.9 million in unpaid bonuses, salary adjustments and severance pay. The breach of contract suit was brought against the Washington, D.C.-based trade publisher by former Exhibitions division president Galen Poss and vice president Michael Green, who left the company last summer.

After more than 18 months of review, the Unified Port of San Diego authorized the transfer of six acres of land from Fifth Avenue Landing to the San Diego Convention Center Corp. (SDCCC), opening the door for an expansion of the San Diego Convention Center. The expansion calls for the addition of 200,000 square feet of exhibit space, 100,000 square feet of meetings rooms, 80,000 square feet of multi-purpose ballrooms and 40,000 square feet of bay-front retail space.
