What it is: Following in the footsteps of Facebook and Twitter, Foursquare is the latest craze among the social media savvy. Foursquare members use the site to alert others in their social networks (including Twitter and Facebook) where they are at any given moment by either logging on to the Web site (www.foursquare.com) or using a smartphone application to “check in.” The people that check in to a given spot or location the most often become the “mayor” of that location.
How it works: Users first create an account at the Foursquare site. Then, they can check in basically wherever they want, from the gym to the library to the hot new restaurant in town. Users earn badges and points along the way. The most esteemed badge: the aforementioned “mayor” designation. Businesses and restaurants hip to the Foursquare trend are offering “mayors” of those locations special discounts and freebies for their repeat business.
Why you should care: Because Foursquare is relatively new, there aren’t many examples of events leveraging the tool yet. However, the possibilities and connections are clear. Consider giving Foursquare members who “check in” to all the keynotes a freebie. Think about using signage at your show to promote Foursquare deals at local restaurants by the convention center. Key exhibitors into the Foursquare trend by showing them how Foursquare users could use the service to “check in” to their booth or to an off-site event.
