Rising sea levels may give the California Coastal Commission and potential bond buyers pause before backing the expansion of the San Diego Convention Center.

Union threats, lawsuits may derail construction plans for the expansion, as well.

Phil Ruffin, owner of the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino, may build a $30 million convention center in Las Vegas connecting to his existing property. “We’ll probably do it,” Ruffin says.

Metro Detroit reported $200 million in revenue from conventions, tradeshows and meetings in 2012—more than double their total from the prior year.

The City of Charlotte is considering raising up to $110 million in debt from convention center funding to pay for renovations to Bank of America Stadium, the football facility for the local NFL franchise, the Carolina Panthers.

The 2012 Democratic National Convention brought nearly $164 million in economic impact to Charlotte and surrounding areas. The city hosted 35,000 delegates, attendees and media members Sept. 4-6 at the Time Warner Cable Arena.

The City of Nashville is considering leasing 50,000 sq. ft. of meeting space at the Nashville Convention Center to the adjacent Renaissance Hotel. Nashville would retain management of the facility’s exhibit space, with a wall erected between the two sides.

The annual winter meeting of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) is still on despite significant cutbacks from the Army and industry in general. Defense News reports that “uniformed presence at the Winter AUSA show will be down sharply from previous years.”

Kodak will withdraw from most of its regular tradeshow stops, instead focusing on a different mix of “customer engagement activities.”

Officials believe it may be the last chance to approve building of a convention center in downtown Albany. A $220 million proposal has been on the table since 2006.

The media got a sneak peak at the newly-renovated convention facility in Cedar Rapids, Ia. The $145.2 million project is on track to be finished by June 1.

The Ottawa Convention Centre received LEED Gold certification as an environmentally sound facility.
