Sandy Shuts Down Shows in New York

As Hurricane Sandy bore down on New York City Monday, three events and a related conference slated for early this week at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center were either canceled or postponed indefinitely

The largest, ISC East, a security-related tradeshow with more than 300 exhibitors was scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 30 and 31. Ed Several, show manager for the Reed Exhibitions event, said he should have more news in the near future about rescheduling the show.

At the same time, the affiliated SIA Security Week—a collection of conferences, dinners and networking activities hosted by the Security Industry Association—was also indefinitely postponed. SIA CEO Don Erickson said, “I am currently working to identify potential dates for the conference in consultation with the SIA Board and all stakeholders.”

Also canceled were the Advanced Energy 2012 Conference, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at Javits, and the JA New York Special Delivery jewelry show, scheduled Monday and Tuesday. For the time being, the ING New York City Marathon Health and Fitness Expo is still scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 1-3.

Other events were canceled in Baltimore and Hartford, Conn. The International Congress of Esthetics and Spa at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia went on as scheduled on Sunday but did not open on Monday.

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., did not have any major events scheduled at the beginning of this week.
