NRA Show Stages Industry's First Flash Mob Dance

The National Restaurant Association busted a move with the industry’s first-ever flash mob dance at its May show at McCormick Place in Chicago. Brainchild of Jennifer Morris, VP, Operations and Services, the viral vid’s been watched more than 10,000 times on YouTube in its first week. (Hint: Morris is in the red shirt in the front row.)

What started as an idea to drive traffic to the show floor on the last day of the event, turned into a buzz-worthy party with about 100 dancers and hundreds watching from three levels. Morris enlisted Derrek Hull, Marketing Manager and NRA Show's resident social media guru and Blogger-in-Chief, who hired a choreographer to map the moves to Lady GaGa’s “Let’s Dance,” then filmed a training video. (Even the training video’s been watched 4,000 times.)

Three weeks out, NRA released the training video and started the social media wheels in motion. An e-mail blast was sent to the pre-reg list one week out with the date, time and location. The day before the mob, a few signs were put out and a training room was set up so people could learn the dance. “We had all types and ages of people come in - attendees, exhibitors, some GES and McCormick Place employees I recruited," Morris says. "I even grabbed a shuttle bus driver and brought him in.”
