Three years after breaking ground, the Wilmington Convention Center is set to open, giving Wilmington, North Carolina a 107,000 square foot venue specializing in events from smaller meetings with 25 people to 2,000-person events.
According to the Wilmington/Cape Fear Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau, the venue has 75 events already on the books. The official grand opening is scheduled for January 13.
When the venue broke ground in 2007, the Bureau estimated it would generate $1.5 million per year in city and county taxes. The convention center has a 30,000 square foot exhibit hall and has been built with LEED certification in mind, including water-saving devices, a green cleaning maintenance program and an aggressive recycling program.
According to the Bureau, the convention center is situated near 8,000 hotel rooms, has an SMG-catered kitchen service and has about 23,000 square feet of meeting space.
