The deal expands on an earlier arrangement to provide strategic education and training to each other’s membership.
Among the benefits will be an enhanced educational presence at each other’s events, stronger collaborative efforts on industry initiatives, increased networking opportunities and a unified voice for industry advocacy.
Fran Brasseux, executive vice president of HSMAI, says that overlap between the two organizations will be minimal. While some chapter events may have schedule conflicts, all content will be original. HSMAI will continue to focus on professional development of suppliers, while MPI will concentrate on education for meeting planners.
“They are a very logical partner for us, and were for years, to our members,” Brasseux says. “So doing something that adds value to both of our member types makes a big difference for the industry and for our partners who have been really pressured with the economy and the group business metrics.”
Some form of a joint effort had been in the works for several years, Brasseux says, but this deal came together only in the last few months.
A promotional dual membership discount will be offered for $650, roughly 20 percent off the full price.
