The Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center will hold its first health care-related event Oct. 14-16, representing the grand opening of the medical mart in downtown Cleveland.
The Cleveland Clinic’s 11th annual Medical Innovation Summit, recognized as one of the most important health care events in the United States, will attract about 1,100 physicians, entrepreneurs, health care executives and investors. This year’s summit will focus on innovations in the care and treatment of obesity and diabetes.
Last year’s summit—and those in previous years—was held at the Intercontinental Hotel on the Cleveland Clinic campus.
Chris Coburn, executive director of Cleveland Clinic Innovations, says, “By moving to the Cleveland Medical Mart, we’re giving our event sponsors an exceptional opportunity to showcase their technologies and provide our attendees an unparalleled experience in a state-of-the-art facility.”
Cleveland Clinic Innovations is the arm of the Cleveland Clinic responsible for business development and commercial applications of medical technology developed at or in collaboration with medical professionals at the clinic. The culmination of each Summit is the introduction of the Top 10 Medical Innovations of the Year list, which typically attracts wide media attention.
While this year’s summit will be the first health care-related event at the new facility, the convention center portion will have its grand opening in July with the 2013 National Senior Summer Games. Officials anticipate 15,000 competing athletes and 20,000 spectators for the event.
“This is another enormous vote of confidence in the new facility and provides the perfect opening bell to launch the Medical Mart into business,” says Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald.
The new Cleveland convention center will have a total of 750,000 square feet with about 225,000 net sq. ft. of exhibit space, 90,000 sq. ft. of meeting space and a 32,000-sq.-ft. ballroom. The medical mart portion will have about 120,000 sq. ft. of leasable space on four floors for health care-related companies.
