In its 25th year, the show at Cobo Center in Detroit, topped 800,000 attendees for the first time since 2003. Attendance on the final day, Sunday, was more than 102,000, bringing the two-week total to 803,451. The last time the show had attendance that high was in 2003 when it reached 838,066.
"We've come a long way since the 'Detroit Auto Show' became the North American International Auto Show," NAIAS Chairman Bob Shuman says in a statement.
Shuman said high attendance at the show is evidence that the American automobile industry is well into a revival.
"The industry is healthy, the products and technology are spectacular, and confidence is high,” he says.
NAIAS Executive Director Rod Alberts says the show continues to play a major role in automakers' global launch strategies.
"We support the promise of the original NAIAS 'organizers' who said 25 years ago, 'You bring the cars, and we'll bring the media.' I think it's safe to say," says Alberts, "we kept our promise."
Alberts says nearly 5,200 journalists attended the press preview.
