The 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show, owned and produced by the Consumer Electronics Association, comes in number-7 on our list. With a 41.46 percent attendee revenue increase from 2009 and creation of its own social media resource, CES more than earned its spot in EXPO’s top 25 events.

The CEA created a three-part media strategy in order to serve returning attendees and exhibitors, as well as to draw in new blood. This effort included proactive media pitching to key audiences, intensive customer service to those who could provide positive coverage of the event and a rapid-response model that ensured CEA news remained fresh and relevant in media channels.

CEA started early, launching a 12-month long PR blitz to create buzz around the January event, which took place at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Las Vegas Hilton, the Renaissance and the Venetian.

The CEA team heavily utilized social media during the campaign, even generating its own social media resource, the CES Social Circle. The Social Circle gathered all Internet commentary on the upcoming CES from social channels like Twitter and Flickr. During the show, the CES Twitter account posted over 1,100 messages, engaging with questions, reposting photos and sharing partner coverage. A Twitter photo hunt was created during the CES, strategically driving attendee traffic to new, as well as less populated, areas of the show’s floor. This effort resulted in CES’ followers growing from 3,053 to 9,637 by the end of the show, a 315 percent growth rate. Over 70,000 tweets occurred during the show.

Gary Shapiro, CEO of CEA, said, “The innovations unveiled at CES brought new optimism and opportunity to our industry and the global economy. This show exceeded expectations with its innovation, optimism and excitement.”
