EXPO’s annual review of new and expanded facilities

This year’s review of convention centers that completed construction between February 2004 and February 2005 may be smaller than in some years past, but it’s a list with something for everyone. In all,  more than 2 million square feet of new and expanded space came online in 2004, ranging from well-known and long-awaited projects such as the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, and the Colorado Convention Center, to an influx of hotels and resorts entering the exhibition business such as Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino and the Kalahari Convention Center in Wisconsin Dells, WI. While the average size of projects is smaller than those of years past, the trend toward marrying exhibition space with resort-style entertainment is growing.

In all, this year’s review of new space includes four new projects offering a total of 805,000 square feet of space, and eight expansions offering a total of 1.2 million square feet of space. Last year, eight new facilities opened, featuring 1.25 million square feet of space and 10 expansions that offer 2.45 million square feet of space. Here’s a look at the projects that were completed in 2004 and early 2005.
